Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) at Milligan

DUO

MFA is designed to increase security by adding a second factor as you log in. For example, when logging into a Milligan online resource, you will enter your Milligan email address and password as usual. After that, you will be prompted on your cell phone to acknowledge this login. After accepting that prompt, you will be logged in.

Getting Started

  • After enrolling, you can return to mfa.milligan.edu at any time to update or change your preferred device(s) for use with MFA.

Frequently asked questions

What is multi-factor authentication (MFA)?

“Authentication” basically means to identify yourself. “Multi-factor authentication” means that you have to identify yourself with two or more sources. The first source is to type in your user name and password as you normally do. The second method for identifying yourself can be to click a button that pops up on your cell phone or typing in a code sent to your cell phone. This allows you to confirm that it was really you who attempted to login and will help prevent others from gaining access to your account. With MFA, even if someone gets your password, they will not be able to log in as you.

Why am I required to use MFA?

Gaining access to passwords has become easier for hackers. Therefore, a password alone isn’t always enough to protect your account. Adding MFA provides another layer of security to protect your account. This not only helps make your account safer, but also helps keep all of Milligan safer. Even if you do not work with any sensitive data, your account has access to the Milligan network. That alone can grant a malicious agent enough access to begin to collect more passwords and gain access to more data and resources.

What services at Milligan require MFA?

  • Office 365
  • Email
  • Canvas
  • Raiser’s Edge
  • Net Partner
  • Self Service
  • TargetX
  • SchoolDude
  • Rave
  • VPN

How often do I need to use MFA?

When utilizing an email app on your cell phone or tablet, you will only need to confirm your identity each time your device turns on after being shut down.

For other services, you will need to use MFA to confirm your identity each time you log in. However, if you are on a trusted device, we recommend checking the “Remember me for 24 hours” box on the MFA confirmation screen. That will “trust” your device for 1 day. Note: The “remember me” check box is both device and browser-specific. You will still receive MFA prompts on other devices (or on the same device if you use a different web browser), but you can check the “remember me” box for those as well.

Do I have to use a smartphone for this?

While a smart phone is the most convenient method, there are other options for you to use. You may choose to have a text message sent to your phone (if it has that ability), you may use a tablet or even a land line phone where the system will call and give you a code through a recording.

How do I switch devices for MFA?

After your initial enrollment, you can log in at mfa.milligan.edu to add a new device or change the settings for your current device(s).
